Summary

  • Chalotra addresses Cavill’s exit from The Witcher and shows confidence in Liam Hemsworth taking over the role of Geralt.

  • Cavill’s departure from the show seems to have come to a natural end, with Chalotra indicating no negativity surrounding the decision.

  • Theories about Cavill’s departure include creative differences and his commitment to playing Superman in the DC Extended Universe.

The Witcher star Anya Chalotra addresses the exit of her co-star Henry Cavill following season 3. Cavill caused a stir in October 2022 when he announced he was leaving The Witcher after three seasons and passing the baton to Liam Hemsworth. Since its premiere in 2019, Cavill has led the Netflix adaptation as monster hunter Geralt, alongside Chalotra, who plays Geralt’s love interest, the sorcerer Yennefer.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Chalotra addressed Cavill’s The Witcher exit and exhibited no qualms about the show’s future. She acknowledged that the love story between Geralt and Yennefer is very special to fans of the show, though Chalotra isn’t worried about Hemsworth taking over as Geralt, believing him fully capable of the role. Check out her statement below:

I’m not worried. He’s going to be brilliant. I really think so. I mean, we’ve spent five years going on this journey together, and I’m so excited for Henry. At some point, that had to come to an end, his portrayal of Geralt, and that’s been incredible. We’ve had such a wonderful time with him. But also bringing in new people to this journey we’re on, is so exciting at this stage.

Why Is Henry Cavill Leaving The Witcher?

Fans of Cavill will likely be interested in Chalotra’s comments, as many are eager for any information on why Cavill left The Witcher. Despite confirming his departure, Cavill has not provided a specific reason for it. Chalotra’s statement indicates no negativity in his departure, suggesting his time just came to a natural end. This could indicate his departure was merely the result of a contract ending, a desire to focus on new projects, or even just wanting a break from acting, though two other prominent theories have arisen to try to explain why Cavill left.

One theory posits that Cavill left The Witcher because of creative differences. Cavill has long reiterated how important the franchise is to him, as he’s not just an actor who got acquainted with The Witcher after landing the role, but rather a true fan of the franchise, especially Andrzej Sapkowski’s original fantasy novels. Years before his departure, Cavill stated he was only committed to The Witcher for as long the show honored Sapkowski’s work. Considering that the show has diverged from the books at times, some suspect Cavill simply made good on his promise.

Another theory is that Cavill left to commit to playing Superman in the DC Extended Universe. At the time he left The Witcher, he believed he was permanently returning as Superman, only for plans to change when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios and recast Superman for the rebooted DC Universe. New opportunities have arisen as he’ll be involved in an Amazon Warhammer 40k TV show, another passion project for the avid gamer that may make Cavill’s The Witcher exit a little easier to accept for fans of the actor.
