Resume

  • Former Nickelodeon star Jamie Lynn Spears reveals she read for a role in Twilight but doubted its success potential.

  • Spears, known for her role in Zoey 101, was skeptical of a movie about vampires and didn’t think people would be interested.

  • While it’s unclear what role Spears auditioned for, her pregnancy and doubts about the film’s success may have made it an unrealistic possibility for her.

Former Nickelodeon star Jamie Lynn Spears reveals she once unsuccessfully read for a role in hit vampire romance film Dusk but was skeptical about the chances of success. Based on Stephenie Meyer’s bestseller of the same name, Dusk was released in November 2008 and became a box office success, grossing over $400 million against a production budget of approximately $37 million. The film spawned three financially successful sequels and made stars of lead actors Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Spears, meanwhile, rose to fame playing Zoey Brooks in the sitcom Zoe 101 from 2005-2008.

In a recent interview with Variety (which took place before the SAG-AFTRA strike), Spears discussed many moments in her career, including her pregnancy, hiatus from Hollywood, and eventually returning to the role of Zoey in the upcoming comedy-drama sequel. Zoe 102. During the interview, the 32-year-old also discussed how she read several scripts around the time the show came to an end, including Dusk, which she did not think would be such a success. Spears remembers reading the script and wondering who would be interested in a movie about vampires. Read her full quote below:

I’ve been reading for “Twilight.” This was before vampires really made their mark. Now we all like to watch stories about vampires, but I was literally like, ‘Vampires? Are you kidding?” I remember reading it and saying, “Who’s going to watch these vampires?” Boy, was I wrong.

How would Twilight have formed if spears had been thrown?

While Spears doesn’t name the role she wanted to read for, based on her age at the time and her status as a sitcom star (and younger sister to pop icon Britney Spears), it was probably a meaty part and could have even been Stewart’s starring role of Bella. Dusk became a huge success, making many of its cast household names, so it’s unclear exactly how Spears would have fared in the movie and whether her cast might have changed any of the creative decisions or other casting choices.

It should also be noted that Spears’ pregnancy in 2007 at the age of 16 led her to retire from acting after the end of her career. Zoe 101so it’s not clear she could even have had a part in it Dusk Anyway. This, in combination with the Sweet magnolias actor doubting the film’s success suggests that this would not have been a realistic possibility for her.

DuskThe company’s huge success shows that choosing the right roles and projects can be a minefield, especially for young up-and-comers. It’s hard to know what’s going to be a hit and what’s not, and even there’s no guarantee you’ll win the part — even future Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence’s Dusk audition failed immediately. Like many actors who had auditioned for roles in Dusk, however, Spears’ career could have been different had she won a role.
