George A. Romero’s Final Living Dead Movie Starts Filming This Year, Plot Details Reportedly Revealed-TGN

Summary

  • Filming for George A. Romero’s final installment, Twilight of the Dead, will begin in Puerto Rico in late 2023.

  • It will explore the dark nature of humanity from the perspective of the last humans caught between factions of the undead.

  • Twilight of the Dead has a finished script from writers Joe Knetter, Robert Lucas, and Paolo Zelati. It follows the canon of Romero’s films from Survival of the Dead.

George A. Romero’s final installment in the Night of the Living Dead film series will begin filming later this year. Night of the Living Dead is Romero’s classic zombie movie, becoming a classic about the horrors of the undead. Romero continued to expand on the world of Night of the Living Dead throughout his life, producing five sequels until his death in 2017.

Now, Deadline reports a final Night of the Living Dead sequel will begin filming in Puerto Rico in late 2023. The movie, titled Twilight of the Dead, will be based on a treatment written by Romero prior to his death. The horror will reportedly be set on a tropical island, “(delving) into the dark nature of humanity from the perspective of the last humans on earth who are caught between factions of the undead.

What Will Twilight Of The Dead Be About?

Twilight of the Dead now has a finished script from writers Joe Knetter, Robert Lucas, and Paolo Zelati. Romero’s wife, Suzanne Romero, is also attached as a producer, with Roundtable Entertainment backing the project. In addition, Twilight of the Dead is not the Night of the Living Dead sequel announced in 2022 to be directed by Nikyatu Jusu, instead following the canon of Romero’s movies from Survival of the Dead.

Twilight of the Dead will likely take place after the events of Survival of the Dead, which saw its protagonists, Sarge “Nicotine” Crockett, Boy, and Tomboy, escape an island full of zombies aboard a ferry. While it’s unclear if this same island will be the setting of Twilight of the Dead, the location may be where Romero intended the series to end. If so, Twilight of the Dead would have a tangential connection to Survival of the Dead, which is present in many of Romero’s Night of the Living Dead films.

Since Twilight of the Dead is set to feature zombie factions, the movie may explore the idea of zombie sentience. This was previously touched on in Romero’s Land of the Dead, which featured the sentient zombie leader Big Daddy. Since Night of the Living Dead still holds up today, it remains to be seen if Twilight of the Dead will live up to the memorable classic.
