Urban warfare expert John Spencer analyzes the action sequences The robbery: redemption, praised the film’s accuracy for close quarters combat tactics. Released in 2011, The robbery: redemption is an Indonesian action film directed by Gareth Evans, starring Iko Uwais as a SWAT officer whose team gets trapped in an apartment complex controlled by a ruthless crime lord. The film was praised for its impressive action sequences and complex choreography.

Now, for a recent video for InsiderSpencer, a retired U.S. Army officer and urban warfare expert, discusses how accurate The robbery: redemption‘s depiction of close quarters combat really is.

Spencer reveals, as seen in the clip above (the relevant portion begins at 4:27), that the action movie is actually surprisingly authentic in terms of its depiction of what tactics would be used when fighting in a tenement or similar situation. Check out his comments on a series of clips from below The robbery: redemptionas well as his overall accuracy score out of ten for the film:

“I really like this clip and I wish I could show more soldiers to think about buildings differently. Especially if you’re defending a house, you want to get rid of the stairs, get rid of the doors and absolutely throw furniture down. But the scene is also really great because it shows you that that’s not necessarily what you leave behind to protect you from bullets, because bullets go through wood, through dust and everything.

“That’s a great lesson that clip teaches you and that we teach our soldiers is to stay away from windows. You crouch down to go under it, slowly walk around it. Incoming bullets probably wouldn’t be that dramatic, but (it would be). Absolutely, we tell you to stay away from windows.

“That clip is very important for something people don’t even think about even in the military, which is mouse-holing. Making holes in walls, in floors, to move through without being seen. It is very common in big city battles. Actually, I’d like soldiers to carry an ax or something like that, but there are other ways to do it. Sometimes we use explosives, sledgehammers, axes like that to make that hole. Real tactics, really everything, so I’m going for that with a nine.”

Why The Raid’s action holds up so well

The robbery: redemption heralds Uwais as a major figure in the action movie landscape and fully showcases his skills. The action sequences show Uwais’s character, Rama, taking on several enemies at once, using wide angles and longer shots to show Uwais doing it all in real life. Uwais would go on to star in a number of other action films, including The raid 2 And The night comes for us, and he is also scheduled to appear The Expenses 4.

On a relatively small budget, Evans’ film also makes great use of the limited locations, creatively staging fight scenes in hallways, apartments, and stairwells. The robbery: redemption It even feels like a video game at times, with Rama moving from one level to the next, taking on enemies in battle sequences that get progressively more brutal and complex.

While The robbery: redemption itself indebted to classic martial arts cinema, it is also not difficult to see that the style of the film American films such as the John Wick franchise. Evans would even surpass the action in the original movie with The raid 2which abandons the cramped apartment environment in favor of a variety of set pieces around Jakarta. The robbery: redemption may be over a decade old now, but the action still holds up remarkably well, in addition to apparently being quite tactically accurate.
