Virender Sehwag Slammed Shubman Gill Despite Scoring A Century-TGN

Young India opener Shubman Gill cracked his 6th ODI century – and 5th in 2023 – on Sunday at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore in the 2nd ODI against Australia. However, despite his ton, which helped India win the match, Shubman Gill received criticism from the fans and experts, including former India opener Virender Sehwag.

This was because Shubman Gill, after being aggressive for three-fourths of his innings, slowed down very much when he was nearing his century milestone. Gill also got out soon after reaching his hundred, getting out for 104 runs in 97 balls.

“He missed out last time but ensured that he got his hundred today, but I would still say that the form he is in he should have scored 160 or 180. He is now of just 25. Had he scored 200 today then he wouldn’t have become tired and could have fielded as well. At 30, he would have found it difficult because he wouldn’t have recovered. So it is better to score big runs now,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

Shubman Gill could have completed his second double hundred: Sehwag

Gill reached his century in the 33rd over and got out an over later. Virender Sehwag feels that Shubman Gill, who has one ODI double century to his name from earlier this year, missed out on another bumper score in Indore, the same venue when Sehwag hit his only double century in 2011.

“When you are in form and you are scoring runs then don’t throw your wicket away. When he got out, there were 18 overs still remaining. Had he played for 9-10 overs more he could have completed his second double hundred. Rohit Sharma scored three double hundreds. He had the opportunity today. A 200 has been scored at this venue by a player named Sehwag, because it is that sort of a track,” the former opener added.

Gill is the leading run-scorer in ODIs in 2023 with 1230 runs in 20 knocks at an average of 77 with 5 centuries and 5 fifties to his name.

Gill, along with Shardul Thakur, has been rested from the 3rd ODI as India have already sealed the series.
